What Happens in the ADHD Brain?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition.

ADHD Is More Than “Not Paying Attention”
Imagine having a radio where the volume changes by itself.
Sometimes it’s too quiet. Sometimes it’s incredibly loud. Sometimes several stations seem to be playing at once.
The issue isn’t that the radio doesn’t work. The challenge is regulating it.
Although the brain is far more complex than this analogy, it can be a useful way of thinking about some experiences associated with ADHD.
A child may know they are supposed to listen but find their attention repeatedly pulled elsewhere.
An adult may desperately want to complete a piece of work but find themselves jumping between tasks.
Someone else may become so absorbed in one activity that transitioning away from it feels incredibly difficult.
These aren’t simply questions of effort or willpower.
What Is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that provides information about brain activity in real time.
During neurofeedback training, sensors are placed on the scalp to detect electrical brain activity. These sensors do not put electricity into the brain. They simply measure activity.
Specialist software analyses this information and provides feedback — often through a visual or auditory experience.
The brain receives information about its own activity as it happens.
Over repeated training, this feedback creates an opportunity for the brain to learn and adapt.
This ability of the brain to change in response to experience is known as neuroplasticity.
How Could Neurofeedback Relate to ADHD?
Research into neurofeedback and ADHD has examined brain activity associated with areas including attention, inhibition and regulation.
Rather than asking someone to simply “try harder to concentrate,” neurofeedback works at the level of brain activity.
The specific training used should depend on the individual rather than their diagnosis alone.
Two people can both have ADHD and experience it very differently.
One person may primarily struggle with distractibility and maintaining attention.
Another may experience impulsivity, restlessness and difficulty slowing down.
Another may struggle most with emotional regulation, overwhelm or sleep.
This is why neurofeedback should not be approached as a generic programme where everyone with ADHD receives identical training.
What Does a Neurofeedback Session Feel Like?
Neurofeedback itself is non-invasive.
Sensors are placed on the scalp while the individual typically watches or listens to something on a screen.
The system monitors brain activity and provides feedback according to the training protocol being used.
There is no need to consciously work out how to change your brainwaves.
The feedback provides the brain with information, and learning occurs through repeated training.
For children in particular, this can make neurofeedback very different from interventions that require them to repeatedly explain how they feel or consciously practise concentration for long periods.
Can Neurofeedback Treat ADHD?
This is an important question — and one that deserves a balanced answer.
Research into neurofeedback for ADHD has produced promising findings in some areas, particularly around attention and behavioural symptoms. However, results vary between studies, neurofeedback protocols and individuals.
Neurofeedback should therefore not be presented as a cure for ADHD, nor should anyone be promised a particular outcome.
ADHD is complex, and support may involve different approaches depending on the person. These can include medication, psychological support, occupational therapy, educational adjustments, lifestyle interventions and other forms of care.
Neurofeedback may form one part of a broader, individualised approach.

What About ADHD Medication?
Neurofeedback and ADHD medication are not necessarily an either/or decision.
Medication can be an important and effective part of ADHD management for many people.
Someone considering neurofeedback should not stop or alter prescribed ADHD medication without speaking to the healthcare professional responsible for their treatment.
Neurofeedback can instead be explored as one potential component of a wider support plan.
